Market Weekend: U District Street Fair 5/18-5/19/24

This past weekend, I had the incredible opportunity to showcase my work at the U District Street Fair in Seattle. It was a two-day event filled with excitement, new connections, and plenty of memorable moments. Here’s a recap of the experience!

Day 1: A Rainy Start

The first day of the fair started off with a classic Seattle twist – rain! The weather was cold, and the sky was overcast, but that didn’t dampen the spirits of the Seattleites. I was pleasantly surprised by the number of people who showed up despite the less-than-ideal weather.

Setting up my booth in the drizzle was a bit of a challenge, but I was prepared with waterproof tent walls which helped to protect my art and stationery. The rain created a cozy, intimate atmosphere as people huddled under the canopies and explored the various stalls. I had some wonderful conversations with visitors who were genuinely interested in my work. The cold weather seemed to bring everyone closer together, creating a sense of community.

Day 2: Sunshine and Success

Day two couldn’t have been more different from the first. The sun came out, the skies cleared, and the temperature was perfect. The fair was bustling with even more people, and the energy was contagious. The bright weather brought out the vibrant colors in my watercolor and gouache paintings, making my booth even more inviting.

Sales picked up significantly on the second day. It was incredible to see people appreciating and purchasing my art goods. From prints and cards to hat paintings, there was a lot of interest in the variety of items I had on display. The sunny weather seemed to lift everyone’s spirits, and the atmosphere was filled with positive energy. Thanks to the sun I sold 3 hats today!

Highlights and Reflections

One of the highlights of the weekend was meeting fellow artists and makers. The U District Street Fair attracts a diverse group of creatives, and it was inspiring to see the range of talent on display. Sharing experiences, tips, and encouragement with other vendors was a valuable part of the experience. My booth neighbor was a woman named Rashmi (@sharp_henna) who did wonderful henna tattoos freehand. She offered to do mine before the start of Day 2 and I can't stop looking at my hand. She is so talented!

Another memorable aspect was the feedback I received from customers. Hearing how my art resonated with people and brought them joy was incredibly rewarding. It’s moments like these that remind me why I love what I do.

Overall, participating in the U District Street Fair was a fantastic experience. Despite the rainy start, the weekend turned out to be a success. The combination of dedicated fair-goers, supportive fellow vendors, and the eventual sunshine made it an event to remember. I’m grateful for everyone who stopped by my booth and supported my work.

I can’t wait for the next fair and the new adventures it will bring!

Until next time, stay colorful.
