Art Supplies I Use for Mixed Media Art

Recently I’ve been really into creating mixed media art in my sketchbook. I love how loose I can get with applying layers of different art mediums. Here are my favorite art supplies to use when creating my mixed media artwork.

  1. Caran D’ache Neocolor 2 crayons

These crayons are some of my all time favorite art supplies. They’re so incredibly versatile, use them as regular wax crayons or add some water and you get gouache-like effects. I love the variety of colors, especially the pastel colors.

  2. Watercolors

One of my favorite hacks with using Neocolor 2s is that I can use the crayon shavings as watercolor by putting the shavings in half pans and putting a few drops of water in them. Now I get sharper points on my crayons and more watercolors! If you have these neocolor 2 crayons already I recommend getting a sharpener made for them to maximize the product.

  3. Mixed media sketchbook

This is the first time I’ve ever tried a Stillman & Birn Zeta series sketchbook. I’ve been pretty loyal to the Canson XL mixed media sketchbooks & Etchr sketchbooks but I wanted to try something new. So far, I really enjoy this sketchbook! The paper is pretty thick, about 270 gsm and the texture is smooth. I probably wouldn't use this sketchbook just for watercolor because I'm not sure if I like how the watercolor dries on top of the paper but for mixed media, it's pretty awesome!

  4. Prismacolor Colored Pencils

I love adding details to my watercolor washes with colored pencils. They allow me to be a little bit more precise and add some more textures to my artwork. I haven’t tried many other colored pencil brands but Prismacolor has been my tried and true so far!

  5. Tombow fudenosuke pen

This is my favorite brush pen hands down. I’ve used this ever since my hand- lettering and calligraphy days back in 2016. I love using it for line work and lettering to enhance my artwork. I always keep one of these pens in my pencil pouch!

Let me know if you’ve tried any of these art supplies and what you think about them! If you also do mixed media, what kinds of supplies do you use?

Until next time, stay colorful.
